The announcement comes as Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis remain a regional front in the wider US-Israeli war on Iran that began with strikes on February 28. Fighting around Taiz and government claims of strikes on Houthi targets in Sanaa and Saada have intensified in recent days. The Houthis claimed an attack on a facility linked to Saudi oil giant Aramco near Riyadh — a claim the Saudi-led coalition has called misleading.
Al Jazeera’s Iran war live blog also reported that al-Alimi announced the start of operations to retake remaining Houthi-held territory.
Claims still unverified
Yemeni government forces have separately claimed large casualty figures from recent operations against the Houthis. Those tallies could not be independently verified by international outlets and were not confirmed by Houthi authorities.
