India captain Shubman Gill produced one of the most remarkable innings in one-day international history as the hosts chased down 406 to beat the West Indies by eight wickets in the second ODI in Guwahati.
Fastest double century in ODIs
Gill finished unbeaten on 223 from 133 balls, reaching his double hundred in 117 deliveries — the fastest in men's ODI cricket, beating Ishan Kishan's previous mark of 126 balls against Bangladesh in 2022, ESPNcricinfo and India Today reported. It was Gill's second ODI double century and the highest individual score in an ODI chase.
Rohit Sharma scored 101 as the openers put on 255, India's biggest partnership in a chase. India completed 406 for 2 in 43.3 overs, winning with 39 balls to spare. Ruturaj Gaikwad was at the crease when the winning run was scored.
West Indies post 405 but still lose
Earlier, West Indies made 405 for 7 — their highest ODI total — with centuries from Amir Jangoo (114), Shai Hope (104) and John Campbell (101). Kuldeep Yadav took 2 for 65. The match became the first ODI to feature five centuries, according to ESPNcricinfo.
India's successful chase of 406 is the second-highest in men's ODI history, behind South Africa's 438 for 9 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006, statistical coverage from India Today said. West Indies' 405 is among the highest totals in a losing cause.
Series impact
The victory sealed the series for India with one match still to play. The third ODI is scheduled for New Chandigarh on 3 October.
