India defeated Malaysia 5-1 in the men's hockey final at the 2026 Asian Games on Saturday, successfully defending their title for the first time and securing a direct berth for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
Captain Harmanpreet Singh scored twice as world No. 8 India claimed a fifth Asian Games hockey gold at the Gifu Prefectural Green Stadium in Kakamigahara, Japan. Jugraj Singh, Hardik Singh and Shilanand Lakra also found the net, while Shello Silverius scored Malaysia's consolation, according to Olympics.com and reports from The Indian Express and PTI.
Harmanpreet brace seals early control
Harmanpreet opened the scoring in the 11th minute from a retaken penalty corner with a powerful drag flick. Malaysia leveled three minutes later when Silverius trapped a long aerial and finished past the Indian defense. Jugraj Singh restored the lead in the 23rd minute with another penalty-corner drag flick past goalkeeper Zaimi Mat Deris.
Hardik Singh converted a penalty stroke in the 42nd minute after a Malaysian foot blocked Abhishek's shot, stretching the advantage to 3-1. In the fourth quarter, Lakra scored the match's only field goal in the 54th minute before Harmanpreet completed his brace from another penalty corner in the 57th to make it 5-1.
Historic double and Olympic path
The win under coach Craig Fulton was India's first successful Asian Games title defense and capped a landmark campaign in which both the men's and women's teams won gold at the same Games for the first time. Manpreet Singh became the first Indian hockey player to win three Asian Games gold medals. Malaysia took silver; Pakistan earlier beat South Korea 5-3 for bronze.
