Iranian state media reported on Sunday that explosions were heard from the direction of the sea near Qeshm Island and Sirik in southern Iran, close to the Strait of Hormuz, according to Iran International’s live coverage of IRNA and Fars News reports.
State news agency IRNA said the sound of an explosion was heard from the sea near Qeshm and that no impact had been reported on the island itself. Local sources had not provided further details at the time of the report. Later Sunday, the IRGC-affiliated Fars news agency reported that several explosions were heard from the direction of the sea in parts of Qeshm Island and Sirik.
Unconfirmed cause near Hormuz
Neither IRNA nor Fars, as relayed by Iran International, named an attacker, a weapon type or a confirmed target.
Officials had not issued a detailed battlefield assessment in the initial reports. The Candor Post treats the accounts as reports of sounds heard from the sea, not as a verified strike on land or a confirmed naval engagement.
The reports land as commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz remains under severe disruption. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said Sunday that four vessel strikes by unknown projectiles had been reported in the strait from October 1 to 4, all on the Omani side of the waterway, according to Iran International. UKMTO also cited continued IRGC activity including drone overflights and surveillance of merchant vessels.
Diplomacy and pressure still in play
Tehran continues to insist the strait will not reopen until Washington meets conditions linked to a June memorandum, while US officials keep diplomatic and military options open. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said Sunday that Iran was reviewing a US response to Tehran’s seven-day Hormuz proposal and would communicate a final position after internal review, Iran International reported.
Qeshm, Iran’s largest island in the Persian Gulf, sits at the mouth of the strait that carried about a fifth of the world’s oil trade in peacetime before the US-Israel war on Iran began on February 28. Any unexplained blast reports near the waterway typically heighten market and security concern even when damage is not confirmed.
As of Sunday evening, Iranian state outlets had not reported casualties or shoreline damage linked to the Qeshm and Sirik reports. The Candor Post will update if IRNA, Fars or another trusted outlet publish a verified cause or impact assessment.
